Elliot McKay See Jr. (July 23, 1927 – February 28, 1966) was an American engineer, naval aviator, test pilot and NASA astronaut. See received an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1945.
1 de mar. de 2021 · Tragedy struck the NASA community on Feb. 28, 1966. Gemini-IX prime crew members Elliot M. See and Charles A. Bassett were flying a T-38 Talon aircraft from Houston to St. Louis to attend a rendezvous simulation at the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation’s plant, the manufacturer of the Gemini spacecraft.
On February 28, 1966, a NASA Northrop T-38 Talon crashed at Lambert Field in St. Louis, Missouri, killing two Project Gemini astronauts, Elliot See and Charles Bassett. The aircraft, piloted by See, crashed into the McDonnell Aircraft building where their Gemini 9 spacecraft was being assembled.
Elliot See and Charlie Bassett were the prime crew for Gemini 9. On February 28, 1966, they were flying in a NASA T-38 trainer to visit the McDonnell plant in St Louis, where their spacecraft was in assembly. See misjudged his landing approach, and in pulling up from the runway, hit Building 101 where the spacecraft was being assembled.

In the early fall of 1962, Neil Armstrong climbed into a car with GE test pilot Elliot See Jr. at what is now called the Armstrong Flight Research Facility in Edwards, California. They set out from the Mojave Desert town for NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston some 1,600 miles away.
