The band was formed by Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, multiple instruments), Roy Wood (multiple instruments, vocals), Richard Tandy (keyboards, vocals) and Bev Bevan (drums). Lynne, Wood and Bevan were former members of the psychedelic rock band The Move.

Electric Light Orchestra fue un exitoso grupo de rock de Birmingham, Inglaterra de la época de los 70's y los 80's. Banda formada en 1971 por Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne y Bev Bevan, en prinicipio era un proyecto paralelo a The Move, banda integrada por los mismos miembros, más tarde The Move se disolvería y el genio de Roy Wood tras el debut de E.L.O. abandonaría el grupo quedando Lynne de líder.
