Biographie. May est née Elaine Iva Berlin à Philadelphie en 1932. Elle est la fille de parents juifs, le metteur en scène et acteur Jack Berlin et l'actrice Ida Berlin. Enfant, Elaine joue avec son père dans sa troupe de théâtre yiddish à travers le pays. Elle fait ses débuts sur scène en tournée dès l'âge de trois ans.
