O’Shaughnessy escribió su obra en 1934, el mismo año en que ingresó en la University College of London para estudiar Psicología y conoció a Orwell, con quien se casó en 1936. En el mismo año la pareja se trasladó a Barcelona, donde ella trabajó de voluntaria ayudando a acoger a los británicos que llegaban a la ciudad para implicarse en la lucha republicana.
