Edgar Varèse war das älteste von sieben Kindern des Italieners Henri Varèse und seiner französischen Frau Blanche-Marie Cortot. Er wuchs in Paris und bei seinen Großeltern mütterlicherseits in Le Villars im Burgund auf; eine prägende Rolle in seiner Kindheit spielte der Großvater Claude Cortot. 1892 zogen seine Eltern mit ihm nach Turin.
