Downing College was founded by Sir George Downing, 3rd Baronet. Much of the family's wealth was generated in the 17th century through the governmental career of his grandfather Sir George Downing, 1st Baronet, who served Cromwell and Charles II as well as building 10 Downing Street, the London home of the Prime Minister.

Downing College offers a flexible venue with facilities suitable for conferences, meetings, weddings and gala dinners, together with 180 ensuite bedrooms for residential events. While the College environment itself is quiet and peaceful, the museums, shops and River Cam in the very heart of Cambridge are only a few minutes' walk away.
The teaching of Downing’s undergraduates is shared between the University and the College. University faculties and departments hold lectures and practical classes, attended by students from all colleges. Individual or small-group teaching is provided by the College, taught by our Fellows and by those from elsewhere in the University.
Founded in 1800, Downing is both the newest of the ‘old’ Colleges and the oldest of the ‘new’, set in a spacious landscape of lawns, trees and gardens in the heart of Cambridge.
