Founded in 1800, Downing is both the newest of the ‘old’ Colleges and the oldest of the ‘new’, set in a spacious landscape of lawns, trees and gardens in the heart of Cambridge. Downing College offers a flexible venue with facilities suitable for conferences, meetings, weddings and gala dinners, together with 180 ensuite bedrooms for residential events. While the College environment itself is quiet and peaceful, the museums, shops and River Cam in the very heart of Cambridge are only a few minutes' walk away.
The teaching of Downing’s undergraduates is shared between the University and the College. University faculties and departments hold lectures and practical classes, attended by students from all colleges. Individual or small-group teaching is provided by the College, taught by our Fellows and by those from elsewhere in the University.
