Donn Fulton Eisele was a United States Air Force officer, test pilot, and later a NASA astronaut. He served as command module pilot for the Apollo 7 mission in 1968. After retiring from both NASA and the Air Force in 1972, he became the Peace Corps country director for Thailand, before moving into private business.

Donn F. Eisele ‘48, Astronaut. Donn is the first and only astronaut from Columbus. An Eagle Scout, Eisele competed in Track and Cross Country while at West. Upon graduation, Eisele received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Following graduation he entered the Air Force and became a jet fighter pilot.
16 de nov. de 2023 · The trio had served as the backup crew on Apollo 7 and had flight experience in the Gemini program. As backups, NASA assigned L. Gordon Cooper, Donn F. Eisele, and Edgar D. Mitchell. Cooper had flown previously on Mercury 9 and Gemini VIII, Eisele had just returned from Apollo 7, while this marked the first crew assignment for Mitchell.

Astronaut Donn Eisele was born in Columbus, Ohio, on June 23rd, 1930. He earned a Master of Science degree in Astronautics in 1960 from the Air Force Institute of Technology and later became a project engineer and experimental test pilot at the Air Force Special Weapons Center at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. Eisele was one of the third group of astronauts selected by NASA in October 1963.
