Don Schollander. Donald Arthur Schollander (born April 30, 1946) is an American former competition swimmer, five-time Olympic champion, and former world record-holder in four events. He won a total of five gold medals and one silver medal at the 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics.
Early career. Schollander was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, [2] and learned competitive swimming from his uncle, Newt Perry, who ran a swimming school in Florida. Uncle Newton Perry, now a school principal in Ocala, Fla., was an All-Southern tackle at Ocala High, Southern diving champion at the University of Florida, where he was captain of the swimming team for three years, and a state wrestling champion; he was also picked by Grantland Rice as "the All-American swimmer."

Schollander also posted three world records at 400 metres and shared in eight world records in the freestyle relays. At the 1968 Games he was unable to defend his 100 metres and 400 metres Olympic titles as he failed to make the U.S. team at these distances, but he won his fifth gold in the 4 x 200 metres relay and took the silver in the 200 metre freestyle.
