Donato Francisco Mattera (29 December 1935 – 18 July 2022), better known as Don Mattera, was a South African poet and author. Overview. Born in 1935 in Western Native Township (now Westbury), Johannesburg, Union of South Africa, Mattera grew up in Sophiatown, [1] at that time a vibrant centre of South African culture.
Mattera has written poetry and an autobiography, called Memory is the Weapon. He has written plays and children stories. He was awarded the Steve Biko Prize for his autobiography. Mattera has worked as a journalist on The Sunday Times, The Weekly Mail, now Mail & Guardian and The Sowetan.
1935–2022. Donato Francisco Mattera, better known as Don Mattera, was a South African poet and activist. As part of his struggle for a democratic South Africa, Mattera helped to form the Union of Black Journalists, the African Writer's Association, and the Congress of South African writers.

18 de jul. de 2022 · Renowned author and poet Don Mattera died at the age of 87 on Monday. A family spokesperson, Joseph Cotty, told News24 Mattera would be buried according to Muslim rites. Cotty said the family and Muslim leaders were finalising the details of Mattera's burial.
