Most of those variety shows had lip sync performances. American Bandstand, Solid Gold, Soul Train, etc. It just wasn't always viable to have a live setup.

Dickerson met Prince in 1979 after moving to Minneapolis, quickly joining Prince’s backing band The Revolution. Dickerson played guitar on Prince’s seminal albums Controversy, 1999, and Purple Rain, helping shape Prince’s groundbreaking sound.
