The compelling bluesman Otis Taylor has been described by Billboard as "one of the most innovative and thought-provoking blues artists to emerge in the last 20 years." Definition of a Circle' is a stirring 12-song set from 2007 that covers a wide cross section of emotionally charged themes ranging from the personal to the political.
Three years later Taylor scored again when Downbeat named Definition of a Circle featuring Gary Moore on lead guitar as “Blues CD of the Year” for 2007.. During these years Taylor had learned about the African roots of the banjo and dreamed of a project that would highlight some of the most accomplished contemporary black banjo players.
That said, after hearing "Definition Of A Circle", I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. His songs are personal and from the heart. The band is great, and the trumpet is a nice touch on some songs. This is a different type of blues and it really takes a few listens to digest and understand where Taylor is coming from.
