The album had a much cleaner and more polished sound than their previous three albums and featured two special guests, Tony Iommi, of Black Sabbath, and Dave Mustaine, of Megadeth, the latter also enlisting the help of his own producer Max Norman.
In the following year Iommi teamed up with fellow Black Country band Diamond Head and co-wrote the song "Starcrossed (Lovers in the Night)" for their 1993 Death and Progress album. At Osbourne's "farewell" concert at Costa Mesa in 1992, Dio refused to perform and abruptly left the band.

Iommi is the debut solo studio album by British heavy metal guitarist Tony Iommi . The album took nearly five years to make. All of the songs were written by Iommi, producer Bob Marlette and the respective vocalists of each track (except "Black Oblivion", which was written by Iommi and Billy Corgan ).
The strongest material from Death and Progress is delivered early. "Starcrossed" is a killer metal cut which features the legendary guitarist Tony Iommi guesting, while "Calling Your Name" harkens back on the Diamond Head's goth-metal sounding Canterbury LP.
