Days of Heaven manages, more than any of the director's other films, to short-circuit that; it has always struck me as the American film, certainly of the 1970s and possibly of the whole era between 1968 and the present, that most resembles painting out of all the art forms, and not only because of Néstor Almendros and Haskell Wexler's exquisite cinematography.
