During that the same period, Sylvian created an alternate body of work: a series of collaborations and side projects with leading talents of pop and improv, electronic and contemporary classical music.

David Sylvian may have been the most ambitious of the new-wave veterans. A clever and sensitive student of Riuychi Sakamoto, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Peter Gabriel and, last but not least, Holger Czukay, Sylvian coined a form of "exotic ambient dance ballad" that bordered on the avantgarde and on progressive-rock.
