David Owen grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, and graduated from The Pembroke-Country Day School in 1973. He attended Colorado College before transferring to Harvard University, where he was an editor of The Harvard Lampoon, as was his future wife, Ann Hodgman. He graduated from Harvard in 1978 with a degree in English.
David Owen comes from a long line of proud Virginians. His parents were Virginians. Their parents were Virginians. And he and his wife Ellen raised their son in Richmond, Virginia. Born and raised in Henrico County, David attended Tucker High School, before graduating from the University of Virginia with a B.S. in Civil Engineering.
