David Meltzer (February 17, 1937 – December 31, 2016) was an American poet and musician of the Beat Generation and San Francisco Renaissance. Lawrence Ferlinghetti described him as "one of the greats of post-World-War-Two San Francisco poets and musicians".
At the age of 20 he recorded his poetry with jazz musicians in Los Angeles and also became a singer-songwriter and guitarist for several bands during the 1960s, including The Serpent Power. David Meltzer was born on February 17, 1937, in Rochester, New York. In 1957, he moved to the Bay Area and became associated with the San Francisco Renaissance and the Beat Generation . He was the author of several collections of poetry and fiction, and was also known for being a jazz musician.
Meltzer was the lead singer and guitarist of the psychedelic folk-rock group Serpent Power, which was primarily active in the late 1960s. He taught in the Humanities and Graduate Poetics programs at the now-defunct New College of California in San Francisco for thirty years, between 1977 and 2007.

He is the author of more than 50 books, including No Eyes: Lester Young, David’s Copy: The Selected Poems of David Meltzer, and most recently, When I Was a Poet. One of the key poets of the Beat generation, he is also a jazz guitarist and has recorded several albums, including Poet with Jazz 1958 .
