The band recruited new members Nick Gravenites, Kathi McDonald, and Dave Schallock to replace her, and released two more albums before breaking up in 1972. The classic lineup (minus Joplin, who had died in 1970) reunited in 1987.
However, The Sons broke up once more following the album's release in April, 1971. When the group reformed again in the summer it featured a new rhythm section, with drummer Bill Vitt and bassist David Schallock (from Big Brother and the Holding Company) replacing Bowen and Strong, respectively.
Be a Brother is the third album by Big Brother and the Holding Company, released in October 1970. It was their first album after Janis Joplin 's departure. Recruited in her place were guitarist David Shallock and singer-songwriters Nick Gravenites and Kathi McDonald. [4]

Bobby Vega replaced David Schallock on bass for a short time, and Bill Champlin’s wife, Tamara, was added as a featured vocalist. In 2012, Tim Cain, the original sax player and the band’s first real arranger, re-joined the Sons after 35 years.
