Dark Star: The Music of the Grateful Dead is an album by the David Murray Octet released on Astor Place. It was released in 1996 and contains Murray's versions of compositions by the Grateful Dead . The Octet plays on the first six tracks, and the last is a Murray solo, accompanied only by Bob Weir on acoustic guitar .
It was written by lyricist Robert Hunter and composed by lead guitarist Jerry Garcia; however, compositional credit is sometimes extended to include Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, and Bob Weir. Here’s another snippet of an interview with Hunter talking about the origins of the song: "I was in my cabin. They were rehearsing in the hall, and you could hear from there. I heard the music and just started writing Dark Star lying on my bed.

Robert Hall Weir ( / wɪər / WEER; [1] né Parber, born October 16, 1947) is an American musician and songwriter best known as a founding member of the Grateful Dead. After the group disbanded in 1995, [2] Weir performed with The Other Ones, later known as The Dead, together with other former members of the Grateful Dead.
