I love Andy Dick. I don’t know why but there is something about him that is so lovable and dangerous, an odd and fascinating combination. This movie is a total mess but for the story and the style, it really should be. Andy is an improvisational comedian and Danny Roane is a perfect beautiful cacophony that is a fitting vehicle for its creator.
About 50% of Danny Roane: First Time Director is an obvious attempt to mimic the awkwardness-as-humor style of "The Office", with Danny alternating between a slightly more self-aware Michael Scott and a drunken Dwight Schrute. About 25% is Dick flailing around on screen in a desperate attempt to provoke laughter.
