(fn. 1) From the Thames, which forms the southern boundary, it extends north for nearly 8 miles to Hainault, where a small part of the ancient forest survives. By the river the borough is a mile wide.

The agrarian history of Dagenham has been broadly similar to that of Barking. Any early differences between the two places would in any case be masked by the nature of the main surviving records.
