Mitchell spent most of 1973 in the recording studio creating Court and Spark. Mitchell and engineer Henry Lewy called in a number of top L.A. musicians to perform on the album including members of the Crusaders , Tom Scott's L.A. Express , cameos from Robbie Robertson , David Crosby and Graham Nash and even a twist of comedy from Cheech & Chong .

The year 1973 was relatively quiet for Joni Mitchell, at least as far as the public eye was concerned. She only performed a few times, once at a benefit concert, then a few shows with Neil Young; indeed, much of 1973 would be spent in the studio, finding the right musicians and the right metier for the songs that would make up her next album, 1974's Court And Spark.

Which made the early 1974 arrival of single "Raised On Robbery," a boogie helmed not by Mitchell's dulcimer but Robbie Robertson's heads-down electric guitar, so unlikely. The rest of Court And Spark is not such a radical departure, but still, the main characteristic it shares with Ladies Of The Canyon is that both have Mitchell paintings on the cover.
