Members of The Count Five met while attending Pioneer High School in San Jose, California. The original band was called The Squires, not to be confused with the other psychedelic group of this time out of Bristol, Connecticut. Two friends, John Michalski and Roy Chaney, founded the band in 1964.

Background "Psychotic Reaction" was born out of an instrumental that Count Five played for six months before their manager Sol Ellner, Kenn Ellner's father, suggested that rhythm guitarist John "Sean" Byrne write lyrics for it. Inspiration came in early 1966 when Byrne was seated in a health education class during his freshmen year at San Jose City College in California.

Formed in 1964 in San Jose, California, USA, Count Five were a classic one-hit wonder whose Yardbirds-inspired psychedelic-punk hit Psychotic Reaction, reached the US Top 5 in 1966. They first drew attention by wearing Dracula-style capes to their gigs.
