Bands like the E-Types, the Stained Glass, the Chocolate Watchband, and the Golliwogs (they later changed their name to Creedence Clearwater Revival) were rivals and friends, but the undisputed kings of the turf were the British Invasion-inspired Count Five.

Music writer Lester Bangs, in his legendary essay “Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung”, confessed that he grew to love the “grungy and rumbled” album but was initially put off by that cover image.
