William James "Count" Basie (/ ˈ b eɪ s i /; August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984) was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. In 1935, he formed the Count Basie Orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording.

Count Basie. William Basie. Pianista y director de orquesta de jazz estadounidense. Count Basie nació el 21 de agosto de 1904 en Red Bank, Nueva Jersey (Estados Unidos). Se formó con su madre y con Willie The Lion Smith y Thomas Fats Waller. En 1927 consiguió un trabajo de pianista en un cine para acompañar películas mudas.
