As he reaches the first corner, there is a non-diegetic high pitch sound, which gets higher the closer he gets. Sudden high pitch noises are a common convention in horror films as they build fear, such as in the shower ...
"Come, play with us" is what the twins say to Danny in "the Shining", when they appear, they are killed by an axe and Danny starts to talk with his index finger: "You know this isn't real, Danny!" You can feel the sinister atmosphere, filmed in the (at that time) run down Paris neighbourhood Menilmontant and also in the abandoned charcoal store where I did my performance.
