Columbia Records 1958–1986 is a Johnny Cash compilation album released on Columbia Records in 1987 to commemorate the 28 years Cash (who had recently left Columbia for Mercury Records) recorded with the label, featuring 20 tracks dating from 1958 to 1986.
Hoyt Axton and Tom Rush. Davis lured artists Hoyt Axton and Tom Rush to Columbia in 1969, and both were given what was known as "the pop treatment" by the label. Hoyt Axton had been a folk/blues singer-songwriter since the early 1960s, when he made several albums for Horizon, then Vee-Jay.
Released in 1987, Columbia Records 1958-1986 is an excellent summary of his two and a half decades at the label, even if it is not perfect. First of all, the title is slightly misleading, because this compilation stops roughly around 1986 and the one new track, the opener "Oh, What a Dream," is really an outtake from the early '60s.
