He may have been on the edge of a real cliff, with a harness on and a net right below that was composited out. Or he was on a 2 foot cliff and they composited it to look like a bigger cliff. That kind of compositing is very easy compared to full on CG effects like the Village reveal at the beginning of S3 that looks like hot garbage.
