Historical Context. Named for Northern New York entrepreneur Thomas S. Clarkson, Clarkson University was founded in 1896 in Potsdam, New York, first as the Thomas S. Clarkson school of Technology, then becoming the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial College of technology, then Clarkson University in 1984.
As Clarkson becomes a university, 88 years after its founding, it comprises a student body of approximately 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, including over 800 women. The physical plant is currently valued at* $48.2 million; the endowment has grown to over $19 million; and faculty research attracts over $3.7 million in sponsored funding each year.
