He was a prominent member of the African National Congress (ANC) and a leader of the South African Communist Party (SACP). He also served as chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe (‘Spear of the Nation’), the military wing of the ANC.

He was the fifth of the six children of Gilbert and Mary Hani, and one of the three that did not die during infancy. The name Chris was adopted by him as a nom de guerre, and was in fact the real name of his brother.

  5. On 10 April 1993 Hani was assassinated while stepping out of his car at his home in Dawn Park, Boksburg, by radical right-wing Polish immigrant Janusz Waluś. Hani was shot at approximately 10:20am and died at the scene. During the attack Hani received two bullets to the chest and an additional two sub-sonic bullets to the head.
