It is the second oldest Chinatown in North America. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and a vibrant community that celebrates Chinese culture and heritage.
Chinatown dates back to the 1860s when Chinese immigrants came to Canada to work in the mines and on the railroads. They settled mainly along De La Gauchetière Street near Saint-Laurent Boulevard. The entire area erupts into an exuberant burst of colour and life. Costumes, food, music, dancing – you name it, you’ll find it in Chinatown during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
