1967 veröffentlichte die Band auch ihr erstes Album Big Brother & the Holding Company beim Mainstream-Label von Bob Shad. Im April 1968 erhielt sie dann einen Vertrag bei Columbia Records. Dort erschien im gleichen Jahr die zweite LP Cheap Thrills (Frontcover von Robert Crumb).
Cheap Thrills, Big Brother and the Holding Company's second album, is often considered very good, but in my opinion it is the least essential album Janis Joplin was originally ever involved in. "Piece of My Heart" is a classic performance of course, and the sound of the guitar played by Sam Andrew is overall great, but that is nearly all you need to write home about the album.
