History. Nielsen wrote music in many genres, notably symphonies, concertos and choral music, but also operas and incidental music, chamber music, solo works for violin, piano and organ as well as a considerable number of songs.. Nielsen assigned an opus number only to selected compositions, from Op 1 for the Suite for String Orchestra in 1888 to Op 58 for the organ work Commotio (1930–1931).

He had already fathered a son, Carl August Nielsen, in January 1888, before he met Anne Marie. In 1912, an illegitimate daughter was born – Rachel Siegmann, about whom Anne Marie never learned.

Carl Nielsen had prepared himself by studying the choral style of the old polyphonic masters, and this cantata, which he dedicated to his old theory teacher Orla Rosenhoff, was a great success at its first performance, which he conducted in person at the Music Society on 27 April 1897.
Carl Nielsen’s songs, such as ‘Solen er så rød, Mor’ (Look! The sun is red, mum) and ‘Jens Vejmand’ (John the Roadman), are today part of the national heritage and represent a common meeting ground for all Danes. But alongside these beloved songs, Nielsen also wrote extremely complex and radical symphonic works.

His father, Niels Jørgensen named his son according to old Danish custom ("Niels's son"), painted houses for a meager living, and was an amateur musician.
