Much of the reason is because Bruce Robinson, who wrote the original novel and film, hadn’t felt potential adapters really grasped the spirit of the story.

The plot follows two unemployed actors, Withnail and “I”, who share a flat in Camden, London in the late 1960s. In need of a holiday, they drive to a country cottage belonging to Withnail’s eccentric uncle Monty.
