A comienzos de los años 70 un cuarteto de amigos de Memphis llamados Chris Bell (guitarra y voz, nacido el 12 de enero de 1951), Steve Ray (guitarra), Andy Hummel (bajo) y Jody Stephens (batería) decidieron fomar un grupo al que denominaron Ice Water. Poco después de iniciar su andadura, Steve Ray decidió dejar la banda y abandonar la música.
