Big Brother and the Holding Company is an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1965 as part of the same psychedelic music scene that produced the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Jefferson Airplane.
Big Brother & The Holding Company were pioneers of the San Francisco sound of the 60s. The band launched the career of Janis Joplin and recorded "Cheap Thrills' one of the greatest albums of all time.

Big Brother And The Holding Company were formed at the end of 1965. The initial line-up of the group was Sam Andrew, James Gurley, Peter Albin and Chuck Jones. Chuck Jones was replaced by David Getz in early 1966. Janis Joplin joined the group later in 1966.
