10 de feb. de 2012 · Bessie's two graves. Tomorrow marks the 69th anniversary of the death of Beatrice "Bess" Houdini on February 11, 1943. She passed away aboard a train bound for New York as it arrived in the town of Needles, CA. For the occasion, I thought I'd take a look at the question of her two gravesites.
The press, skeptics and Houdini's family denied Ford's claims and Bess withdrew her reward offer. Bess continued to hold séances, but the last official Houdini séance was on Halloween night 1936, on the tenth anniversary of her husband's death. It, too, was unsuccessful and Bess announced "Houdini did not come through. My last hope is gone.
Bess Houdini appeared as herself in the 1938 film Religious Racketeers (a.k.a. Mystic Circle Murder) directed by Frank O'Conner and produced by Fanchon Royer. In the film, she expressed her belief that communication with those who have died is impossible. The film sparked controversy among spiritualists, but was praised by magicians.

McKane could not have married Harry and Bess as he was in Sing Sing prison at the time. There were also plenty of rackets on the Bowery in those days, and it's possible whatever marriage license the young couple purchased (for $2.00 -- Bess paid) might not have been legit.
