A Bench at the Edge was Luigi Jannuzzi’s debut play. It is an abstract, avant-garde two-hander which explores ideas surrounding life, death, suicide and the abyss. It probes at the dark shadows of society, asking what drives people to the edge and what makes them want to keep on living.
Summary. A person sits on a bench at the edge of an abyss. In the style of Theatre of the Absurd, this is simply done as a bench on the edge of the apron. Along comes a second person contemplating "a heroic dive." Their repartee, the meaning of where they really are and what they are really there for, draws out the humor and conflict of the edge.

Outside a ‘hospital’, ‘No. 1’ (Meg Lake) sits on a bench which overlooks ‘the abyss’. In spite of her nearness to the gaping chasm, she is unperturbed by its presence or its proximity to her.
Held to his comatose body in a hospital bed by a long life support tube, Man One continues to live out a twenty five-year life support existence at the edge of an abyss.
