P. G. T. Beauregard. Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard (May 28, 1818 – February 20, 1893) was an American military officer known as being the Confederate General who started the American Civil War at the battle of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861.

Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard was a Louisiana-born author, civil servant, politician, inventor, and first prominent general for the Confederacy. Beauregard was trained as a civil engineer at the United States Military Academy and served with distinction as an engineer in the Mexican-American War.

P.G.T. Beauregard (born May 28, 1818, near New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.—died February 20, 1893, New Orleans) was a Confederate general in the American Civil War. Beauregard graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York (1838), and served in the Mexican-American War (1846–48) under the command of Winfield Scott.
