Danny Elfman was initially reluctant to score Batman Returns because he was unhappy that his Batman score was supplemented with pop music by Prince. Elfman built on many of his Batman themes, and said that he enjoyed working on the Penguin's themes the most because of the character's sympathetic aspects (such as his abandonment and death): "I'm a huge sucker for that kind of sentimentality."

Batman Returns. The Warner album of 1992 was a regular U.S. release. The 2010 2-CD set from La-La Land was limited to 3,500 copies and was sold through soundtrack specialty outlets for $30. The 2011 Warner set is a limited edition of 2,000 copies, sold for $500 primarily through the official site of the album.
