Organized and curated by The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, this exhibition features over 200 never-before-seen and rarely shown paintings, drawings, multimedia presentations, ephemera, and artifacts. This intimate perspective is shared through the lens of his family – intertwining his artistic endeavors with his personal life, influences, and the times in which he lived.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (French: [ʒɑ̃ miʃɛl baskija]; December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988) was an American artist. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1970s where the hip hop, punk, and street art movements had coalesced.

Understanding this context, and the interrelation of forms, movements, and scenes in the readjustment of the art world is essential to understanding the cultural environment in which Basquiat made work.
