Barry Lyndon is a sumptuously crafted film of Kubrick's that adapts a novel by William Makepeace Thackeray and depicts the adventures of an incorrigible trickster in the eighteenth-century aristocracy. The film explores the decadence, opportunism and moral vacancy of the period with lavish production design, cinematography and costumes, and won an Oscar for Best Art Direction.
