Barnstaple ( / ˈbɑːrnstəbəl / ⓘ or / ˈbɑːrnstəpəl / [3]) is a river-port town and civil parish in the North Devon district of Devon, England. The town lies at the River Taw 's lowest crossing point before the Bristol Channel. From the 14th century, it was licensed to export wool from which it earned great wealth.

1 de may. de 2023 · An ancient town and port on the River Taw, Barnstaple received its charter from the Anglo-Saxon King Æthelstan in 930. The pedestrian streets and alleys of the town centre are brimming with old landmarks like almshouses, a Norman castle mound and a quayside merchant’s hall, all on the Barnstaple Heritage Trail.

It lies on the north bank of the Taw estuary, about 10 miles (16 km) from the Bristol Channel, and is the administrative centre of the district. The Taw is spanned there by a 15th-century stone bridge (widened in 1796 and 1962).
