When Harold Brooks was young, he was nicknamed Teeny, which at some point wound up as Teena and then Tina. Between 1958 and 1961, the tenor saxophonist recorded five hard bop albums for Blue Note as a leader.

  7. As a leader, Tina Brooks recorded with four different trumpeters: Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan (twice), Johnny Coles, and Blue Mitchell. All of them are favorites of mine. Mitchell's strength is in his individual tone and bluesy melodicism.
