Passionné par la musique, Baaba Maal commence à jouer avec des amis lors de ses vacances scolaires. En 1974, après son baccalauréat, il choisit de faire le conservatoire de musique tout en poursuivant des études d'arts plastiques à Dakar. En fait, il n'envisage pas vraiment de devenir artiste, mais plutôt professeur.
