Il a gagné 15 Grammy Awards en tant qu'interprète et compositeur , évoluant la majorité du temps avec son frère trompettiste Randy Brecker , notamment au sein de leur groupe de jazz-fusion The Brecker Brothers .

After a brief period of study at the University of Indiana, Brecker made the big move to New York City in 1969, as so many jazz musicians have done before and since. Aged just 20, he became a member of the jazz-rock group Dreams, recording Dreams and Imagine My Surprise.
