Anton Szandor LaVey was the founder of the Church of Satan, the first organized religion promoting Satan as the symbol of personal freedom and individualism. He synthesized his own philosophy of materialism and occultism based on his understanding of human nature and insights from earlier philosophers. He played music, worked in carnivals, and met Marilyn Monroe before becoming a musician and a mystic.
