As a rule of thumb, try to be at the bottom around sunrise to get the best snow and avoid avalanche danger. We left the Shavano Trailhead with headlamps at 3:30 a.m., which seemed ridiculously early at the time.

The Angel of Shavano Trailhead is located across the road from the Angel of Shavano Campground and serves as major trailhead along the Colorado Trail #1776. The first .25 miles from the trailhead climbs steeply out the North Fork valley and then levels off to an easy hike that winds in and out aspen and spruce/fir forests.

The Indian Chief Shavano lived in the valley below the mountain and became close friends with a freed slave and mountain man named Jim Beckwourth. Another version of the story tells of Chief Shavano's friendship with a scout named George Beckwith.
