27 de mar. de 2023 · He joined the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra in 1978 as a featured soloist and maintained that position after Jones’ departure – so he watched him work this mastery up close. “Charles Mingus, the first time he ever heard Thad play, he said, ‘I just heard Bartók with valves’,” McNeely says, “by which he meant the angles of the melodic writing were very unusual and chromatic.”
Greetings and Salutations is a 1975 big band jazz album recorded by the Swedish Radio Jazz Group with Thad Jones, Mel Lewis and Jon Faddis as guest bandleader / performers. The album was nominated for a 1978 Grammy award in the Best Jazz Instrumental Performance - Big Band category.

Village Vanguard Live Sessions 3 is an unedited rough-mix of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra playing at the Village Vanguard club in New York City in 1967. The tracks were previously released on the album Live at the Village Vanguard on the Solid State Records label.
Biography. Thad Jones was born in Pontiac, Michigan to Henry and Olivia Jones, a musical family of 10 (an older brother was pianist Hank Jones and a younger brother was drummer Elvin Jones ). A self-taught musician, Thad began performing professionally at the age of 16. He served in U.S. Army bands during World War II (1943–46).
