Alfred Howe Terry (November 10, 1827 – December 16, 1890) was a Union general in the American Civil War and the military commander of the Dakota Territory from 1866 to 1869, and again from 1872 to 1886. In 1865, Terry led Union troops to victory at the Second Battle of Fort Fisher in North Carolina.
Terry is most known for his role in capturing Fort Fisher, North Carolina. Although General Benjamin Butler had attempted and failed to capture the fort, Terry worked together with the Union Navy and on January 13, 1865, successfully captured the fort, sealing off one of the Confederacy's last ports.

Alfred Terry was a Union general in the Civil War and the military commander of the Dakota Territory from 1866 to 1869 and again from 1872 to 1886. Born in 1827 in Hartford, Connecticut, to a prosperous family, they soon moved to New Haven, where Terry grew up.
Refocused and now under the control of General Alfred Terry, the great Union fleet returned to the shores of Fort Fisher the night of January 12th, 1865.
